If you've lived long enough, you've probably experienced poor leadership at a distance and up close in your life. You also realize that no leader is perfect and all leaders fall on a continuum from awesome, inspirational leaders to destructive, demeaning leaders.
Sadly, poor leaders an do a lot of damage. They diminish and sometimes break people, programs, and potential. Poor leadership is such a waste of time, energy, and possibility. So how do we work against poor leadership?
Local leadership
First, we have to be informed. For example, too many Americans don't know what's going on in their local communities with regard to leadership. I believe that busy lives sometimes prevent us from getting involved locally, and when we're not involved, poor leadership can weave their way into our lives. I have to improve my knowledge and involvement locally--it's a goal I have as I know how important this is.
What kind of leader are you?
We also have to evaluate our own leadership efforts? In what ways do we lead well and in what ways are we poor leaders? I bet that all of us can find ways to improve our leadership in the areas where we have voice, influence, and responsibility.
Communication and actions
How do the best leaders communicate and act? How can we identify terrific leadership via communication and actions. Honesty is a top priority in this regard, and another top priority is that actions exceed and match one's words.
Poor leadership is a hardship in any arena of life. Right now in the United States we have many weak, greedy, self-serving, and harmful leaders. It's time to find peaceful ways to make change. Onward.
