It's very difficult to stay the course of what is right when those around you are promoting what appears to be wrong. Truly it's like walking against a strong tide. What do you do in situations like this?
First, as my mom always said, "Two wrongs don't make a right."
So, moving forward with this challenge ahead of me, it's important to think deeply about what you consider right behavior--behavior that constitutes good manners, humanity, honest kindness, care, and contribution.
Also, as you consider this issue, many situations exist where right and wrong are not always that easy to discern since context plays a BIG role, so it's difficult in many situations to judge right or wrong especially when you don't fully understand the context related to an individual's actions.
Values I honor for myself and others include the following:
Honesty
I believe honesty is important. When people lie, situations become troubling over time. Acting and speaking with honesty is positive.
Conservation of words
Too many words appear to confound people. As someone who always has a lot to say, it's a positive challenge for me to use words sparingly and pointedly. Often when I use lots of words, it's because I'm trying to make sense of a situation. The clearer I am about a situation, the more concise I can be with words.
Care, Empathy, and Compassion
As much as possible, I believe it's important to be caring, empathetic, and compassionate. Even when people are hurtful and challenging, I want to act in this way.
Patience
A friend of my dad's has been modeling and teaching me patience. With patience, situations often right themselves.
Good manners
Using good manners sets the stage for positive relationships and experiences.
I'm sure I'll add to this list in time.
