Since retiring from full time teaching, I've had the luxury of being able to engage in a large array of new jobs and experiences. Each of these jobs and experiences has made me more aware of who I am, what I desire, and what's a good match for me. For example, I am a tutor at a local school system. I really enjoy the job as it utilizes knowledge and skills I honed over many decades and it gives me a chance to work directly with students in a beautiful, local library. The hours are similarly a good fit for me too.
On the other hand, I signed on to another job that wasn't as good a fit due to the fact that it included an inconsistent schedule and less opportunity to utilize my skills, knowledge, and interests. When I began dreading the job, I knew it was time to leave as the job was not the best fit.
The array of new experiences includes new memberships and activities as well. For example, I joined a local botanical garden and that was a great decision as the garden has wonderful programming, terrific gardens, and wonderful places to walk. I often meet and/or bring friends there. I've joined other local museums and conservation groups which have offered wonderful opportunities too.
It's great to try out new opportunities at this stage of life. I look forward to the many more events, jobs, and activities I'll try in the days ahead.
