The world is welcoming Pope Leo as they mourn the death of Pope Francis. There are so many good people in the world who yearn for leadership that promotes the collective good, so many people who honored Pope Francis' good will towards humankind and the planet.
As I watch the news, I have a range of emotions.
He's a good man
It appears that Pope Leo is a good man suited for this position. I do believe that we are called to particular paths in life, and I believe he is called to be a leader of all that is right and good. Just this week I watched a little dark skinned boy literally dance throughout a store with a big smile on his face. The young child was singing religious hymns, and all I could think of was that this is a little boy filled with the spirit -- a spirit for what is right and good. I believe that Pope Leo is filled with that spirit, and I also recognize that he's human too, and no one human can be or do all things.
He's a man
As a woman, I crave the opportunity for women to be recognized with greater respect and the opportunity to lead. One reason I don't consider myself a Catholic alone is because of the way the church has treated women. I consider myself all religions and none because I have respect for the good of all religions and disdain for the inhumane prejudice and poor actions that all religions of the world include too.
He will follow Christ's life
I have always recognized Christ's life as a radical life of love and service. I honor that, and I know this Pope will follow his inner knowledge, spiritual calling, and the love and care of others to do what he can to direct the world in ways that honor humanity and the planet. This is good.
