We all face challenging situations in life, and when we face those situations, we are left with choices as to how to respond. When this happens, I want to remind myself to "let the good rise." When left with choices of what or what not to do, we can choose to let the good rise. That leads us to the question, What is good?
I thought about this recently as I met with a fair number of situations that have been challenging--emotional situations where no clear choice existed as far as how to act or what to say. When faced with situations like this, we know we can let the good rise if our words are positive (or silence instead) and our actions are life enriching. To speak harshly and hurtfully or to act in ways that harm or incite harm to another is not a positive path. Often, patience is demanded in situations like this because when faced with challenges, it's often true that the challenger is seeking his or her peace, and you are simply part of the backdrop of that theater.
Ways that we can promote the good include the following:
- Say little and let people find their way
- Use stories rather than directives
- Act lovingly rather than speak--actions say more
- Make sure your own life is on track--secure any loose connections
- Be a good listener
- Make time for reflection and rest
- Build rather than destroy
