As I do a big fall clean up in my home, I am reminded that our homes can be a reflection of what we desire and what we value. Understanding this helps me to organize my home and declutter. What is important to me and what do I desire?
Fun
There are a few objects that bring me hours of fun, and I want these items to be readily available in my home. Those objects include bikes, garden tools, beach equipment, art/craft supplies, cookware, entertaining supplies, comfort objects (pillows, blankets. . .), toys for children who visit, good books, computers/speakers/tv, healthy foods, good clothes, and games.
Yesterday I donated a number of old toys (I kept a collection of a few good toys) and other items that don't fit the list above.
Memories
I want a few good photos around my home that remind me of the good times and good people in my live today and in the past.
Art
I have a few beautiful paintings, ceramics, and other artistic items that bring me great warmth and peace.
Holidays
I have a sufficient supply of holiday decorations that brighten the home during the holiday season.
Comfort
We have an almost ample supply of comfortable furniture, blankets, pillows, and sheets to provide guests and ourselves a comfortable stay in our home. I do want to update my bedroom to make it more comfortable in the year ahead.
Ease
I don't want to spend a lot of money or time on home cleaning and organization and that's why I want a simple home with less things and more time.
Gifts
I enjoy giving gifts and I like to have an accessible collection of gifts and gift wrapping supplies.
Notes and letters
I hope to write a note or letter when needed and having a good supply of related materials on hand is helpful.
Books
Having a small, but accessible collection of good books to read is positive. I don't have the space for lots and lots of books.
The key is to think about the kind of home you want and what's important to you before you spend money on useless supplies. It's also a good idea to organize your home often. Fortunately there are many second-hand stores that will take your retired items when you are cleaning up. Onward.
