Mindfulness: Traps to avoid

 As I embrace mindfulness, I'm thinking about the mind-traps I want to avoid.

Obsessing about events and realities that you can't change

There are life events and realities that you have little to no power over, so when it comes to thinking about those events, I think it's best to learn what you can, and then move on. For example, the only good that can come from perseverating about past events is that you make the time to learn from those events and apply that learning to your life today, but to beat yourself up or be victimized by those events is of no use. 

Focussing on one issue without any regard for the landscape of life in general

Sure, one important event in life deserves just attention, but when we are remiss with regard to the greater landscape of life we cheat ourself out of the wonder, opportunity, and good possible. Our lives are full of opportunities great and small day after day, and it's important to be mindful of all that life has to offer rather than perseverate about one situation. 

Too-quick decisions

Give yourself time to think about the decisions you make--when we are too quick to make decisions, we sometimes, our decisions are often not as good as they can be. 

Taking stock of the world around you

It's worth thinking about the people, places, and events around you to get a realistic view of what's happening and how to react. Sometimes we may define the world around us via our thoughts rather than observation. Make time to observe and think about the realities in the world around you.
