Dealing with mental illness

 Today's news contains a dark story about a murder that appears to be the outcome of an individual's mental illness. It's a very sad story that's only breaking now--the kind of story you don't even want to think about. 

Yet, as I think about mental illness and the ramifications of that situation, I wonder about the best ways to deal with those in your midst who suffer greatly from mental illness. 

As I think about this, I have come to these conclusions:

  • Acknowledge mental illness. Too many people close their eyes to mental illness and ignore the symptoms. It's best to acknowledge the mental illnesses that may exist in your midst, and as you acknowledge that mental illness, have compassion and learn as much as you can about how to deal with that illness. 
  • Take care of yourself. If there are those with mental illness in your midst, you have to take care of yourself so that you are not in danger. Some safety tips include these:
    • acknowledge your fears to those you trust
    • don't be alone with people who are a threat
    • get a restraining order if needed
  • Pray for those who suffer. I do believe in the power of prayer.
